This tiger is from Pench National Park in central India. It is very hard to find tigers as there are so few left. I went to Pench and Bandhavgarh in 2009 and maybe I got lucky; I had several decent sightings but these beautiful cats are critically endangered due to poaching. I stayed with her for about an hour during which time she posed for lovely photos on a rocky island and then treated us to hunting an impala. The Mara river runs near by and on our way back to camp, a herd of elephants came through the forest. This made an interesting change to grassland. The Talek is a smaller river than the mighty Mara but visually very appealing. On the day I was studying the leopard in "A flick of the tail" (also on this page) there was a large puddle behind our Land Cruiser. I turned round to see these three zebras drinking. It was a surprise to find her again, but this time not really coming out to play! Our first encounter was this; she was resting up a tree. We saw her again on the ground, but still hard to see clearly in dense undergrowth. In fact, the leopards were the most elusive of all my target animals on this trip. It was a surprise to find her again, but this time not really coming out to play! Our first encounter was this; she was resting up a tree. We saw her again on the ground, but still hard to see clearly in dense undergrowth. In fact, the leopards were the most elusive of all my target animals on this trip. Imagine my surprise - and delight - when I came across two tigers posing for photos! This one was asleep but at one point it raised its head enough to get a nice painting out of it. There are photos and the full story on my website. I flew down to Cape Town and joined the ship for a week. During that time, I visited a local game reserve near Port Elizabeth. Imagine my surprise - and delight - when I came across two tigers posing for photos! This one was asleep but at one point it raised its head enough to get a nice painting out of it. I see plenty of lions in the Maasai Mara so I wasn't bothered about them! This tiger, however, was a real scoop. Mountain gorilla. 12x10 inches. This is a baby Mountain gorilla from the Virunga Mountains in Rwanda. I have only been twice, but trekking up the mountain and through the thick jungle scrub is quite an experience - especially when you come face to face with a giant silverback! It seems remarkable that visitors can do this; there are no barriers or fences; you are right there standing a couple of meters away. You are also briefed beforehand not to make direct eye contact with the adults as they may see it as a threat. Your heart will be pounding (a silverback can easily kill you) while you fumble with your camera! This, and my first wild tiger sighting in Bandhavgarh, India, will always sit as the most rewarding wildlife experiences of my career.
